The family built the grand Templemore Abbey, a neo-Gothic mansion surrounded by forest and gardens. Sadly, the house was destroyed by fire in the 1920s and today lies in ruins, adding mystery to the park.
The Carden Family
In the 18th–19th centuries, the powerful Carden family owned much of Templemore. They shaped the town’s look and legacy, bringing elegance and ambition to the area.
The Black
Castle
Built by the Butlers in the 13th century as a fortified stronghold. In 1698, John Carden leased it from Charles Butler, and in 1704 purchased the estate. Located in today’s town park, the castle was abandoned after a mid-18th-century fire.

The name Templemore comes from the Irish “An Teampall Mór”, meaning “The Great Church.”

In the 12th century, the Knights Templar established a monastery here, making it a local center of faith and power.
After the order’s dissolution, the lands passed to Augustinians. Legends still speak of hidden seals, treasure, and underground chambers beneath the old foundations.
