The name Templemore comes from the Irish “An Teampall Mór”, meaning “The Great Church.” In the 12th century, the Knights Templar established a monastery here, making it a local center of faith and power. After the order’s dissolution, the lands passed to Augustinians. Legends still speak of hidden seals, treasure, and underground chambers beneath the old foundations.

Welcome to

Templemore

Hidden in the heart of County Tipperary, Templemore has lived many lives.

Once home to silent monks and sacred ruins, then a market town with cobbled streets, and now — a peaceful place where old stone meets green parks and mountain myths.

Its story begins over 800 years ago…

Streets were laid out—market square, tree-lined avenues, slate-roofed houses—and the Sisters of Mercy (1863) and Irish Christian Brothers (1932) established schools .

The Abbey (Carden mansion) was burned during the War of Independence, later demolished — its grounds became Templemore Town Park .

Templemore is a vibrant heritage town: historic ruins, leafy park, Garda College, markets, schools, and proximity to Devil’s Bit Mountain with its legendary folklore .

Opened McCan Barracks as Garda Síochána College, the national police training centre .

During the War of Independence, Marian apparitions allegedly occurred, attracting up to 15,000 pilgrims daily and sparking a brief truce between IRA and Crown forces .

John Carden was created a baronet of Templemore and commanded the 30th Light Dragoons .

1790s–1813
Construction of the military barracks (later McCan Barracks) began c.1809 and opened in 1813 to house British regiments, spurring town development .

The Carden family from Cheshire purchased ~2,500 acres from the Butlers, establishing the estate that would shape Templemore’s growth
1650

The Cardens built an Elizabethan‑style mansion called the Priory (later re‑named “The Abbey”) and designed the Town Park with artificial lake .
